A U.S. jury has awarded $3 million to a Bahamian student in a lawsuit claim arising from a local jet-ski incident -- a case that could change global manufacturing of the watercraft. A jury in a U.S. District Court in Savannah, Georgia on August 9 ruled that manufacturer Kawasaki was to pay a 26-year-old student for injuries she suffered in a jet-ski accident in 2006.

Now that school is back in session for many public schools, most districts are encouraging students to keep fit by walking or biking to school this year. But Mapleton Public Schools wants some of its kids to stay on the bus until next year . By then the district should finish a pedestrian-friendly route to school, using a $198,319 federal Safe Roads to School grant.
Bridge projects funded by vehicle registration fees, fines for registration and bonds are coming along slowly. Six of the 121 bridges statewide that are covered by FASTER -- Funding Advancement for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery -- have been completed since the Colorado Bridge Enterprise was created in 2009, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Eighteen bridges are in the construction phase. And for those that remember the tragedy of the partial bridge collapse on 6th Avenue in 2004, killing an entire family, and the I-35W bridge collapse four years ago in Minnesota, it leaves a lot of concern for the safety of our system.
Jefferson County officials are urging residents to take precautions after a sick bat found in south Jeffco tested positive for rabies. Informational postings are being made available at the park and visitors are being told to avoid all stray or wild animals, keep all pets on a leash, stay away from and do not handle bats, and to also be wary of any bats seen during daylight hours.

Beginning today, car-seat requirements in Colorado are providing safer travel for the smallest in our state. A new state requirement being enforced Aug. 1 raises the car-seat requirement to age 8. Previously, children have had to be in car seats through age 6.
